Police arrest four in Dili
DILI, East Timor: Four people have been arrested on suspicion
they were planning to organize an anti-government demonstration,
local Police Chief Col. Andreas Sugianto said yesterday.
Andreas said that the four were members of a clandestine pro-
independence group. He declined to name the suspects, but said
they could face trial.
The four are suspected of trying to organize a demonstration
to attract the world's attention to their cause while UN
Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali was in Indonesia, he
said.
"They are liable to prosecution because they planned a
criminal act," he said.
East Timor integrated with Indonesia in 1976, but the UN has
yet to recognize this. (yac)
