Police Arrest Five Hunters of Protected Sambar Deer in Lampung

Police have arrested five individuals involved in the hunting of protected sambar deer in the Dusun Way Jambu area, Pekon Tampang Tua, Pematang Sawa District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung. The five were engaged in hunting, killing, and transporting the sambar deer.

According to detikSumbagsel on Sunday (28 May 2026), Tanggamus Police Chief AKBP Rahmad Sujatmiko stated that the case was uncovered when SGA TWNC officers conducted a patrol in the conservation forest area on Monday (18 May) around 2:30 AM WIB. Officers found several people carrying cut pieces of sambar deer in shoulder-slung sacks.

“Two suspects, identified as SF (46) and AH (27), were apprehended at the scene with the hunting evidence,” Rahmad said in a statement on Wednesday (27 May).

Following investigations, police formally named the two as suspects. Three other suspects initially fled but later surrendered to Tanggamus Police Station on Saturday (23 May). The three are identified as AS (24), SO (21), and DI (34).

“The three suspects who had previously fled have now surrendered, and all suspects are currently detained for further legal proceedings,” he added.

Rahmad explained that the suspects used homemade rifles to hunt the sambar deer. After the animals were killed, their bodies were cut into pieces to facilitate transport out of the forest area.
