Jakarta (ANTARA) - Police have arrested the driver of an electric car, identified by the initials AW, who is suspected of a hit-and-run involving a motorcyclist, identified as S, on Jalan Meruya Selatan, near Mercu Buana University, Kembangan, West Jakarta, on Monday.

“It’s done. The perpetrator has been caught in Kebon Jeruk, and the case is being handled by the Traffic Accident Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police,” said Kembangan Police Traffic Unit Head AKP Karta when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.

Karta explained that police are still investigating the alleged hit-and-run by AW. “Whether it was a sideswipe or a direct collision, that will be clarified later by the Traffic Accident Unit, as the case has been handed over to them,” he said.

Regarding comments by netizens on a viral video claiming the victim had died, Karta firmly stated that the victim only sustained injuries. “That is not true. Officers went to the scene this morning and it was handled immediately. It is not true, no one died,” Karta said.

Meanwhile, the reason AW fled the scene was to avoid a mob attack. “According to the BMW driver’s statement, he was afraid and left to avoid the mob’s anger,” Karta said.

Earlier, an electric car became the target of a mob’s fury after allegedly hitting a motorcyclist on Jalan Meruya Selatan, near Mercu Buana University, Kembangan, West Jakarta, on Monday.

Head of the Law Enforcement Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Division, AKP Joko Siswanto, stated that the victim, identified as S, who was riding a motorcycle with licence plate number B-6242-VDR, was injured in the incident. “He suffered abrasions on his hands and feet and sought treatment at Kembangan Regional General Hospital,” Joko said.

Initially, the electric vehicle with licence plate number B-77-NRI, driven by AW, was travelling on Jalan Meruya Selatan from north to south. “Upon arriving in front of Mercu Buana University, the car collided with the motorcycle ridden by Sutiyo, which was travelling from south to north,” Joko said. The collision caused Sutiyo to sustain injuries and his motorcycle to be damaged in several parts.
