Police arrest copper cable thief at Jamsostek Tower in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta

Police have arrested a suspect identified as AY (44) who stole copper cables from Jamsostek Tower in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta. “The suspect admitted to taking copper cables from the generator room and carrying out the thefts incrementally since 2023,” said Mampang Prapatan Police Chief AKP Dian Purnomo in Jakarta on Wednesday. He revealed that the thefts had gone unnoticed until the building management installed CCTV cameras in the generator room. The suspect, identified as AY, was captured on CCTV footage in the Jamsostek Tower generator room on 23 May 2026 at approximately 5:15 am WIB. The suspect cut the cables using a saw and placed them into a prepared bag. “The suspect removed generator power cables by cutting the wiring within the generator room,” said Dian. In each instance, AY stole 22 kilograms of copper cables, which were sold at Rp180,000 per kg. The proceeds were used to settle debts. “The proceeds from the stolen cables were used to pay off debts and daily expenses,” Dian added.
