Police have investigated and resolved a car theft case involving a man in Tambora, West Jakarta, who was found unconscious on the street due to intoxication. The suspect has been apprehended.

“Based on the results of the investigation and clues from CCTV recordings near the crime scene, officers from the Tambora Police Criminal Investigation Unit successfully identified and apprehended the suspected perpetrator,” said Tambora Police Chief AKP Wahyu Hidayat in a statement on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Jatiman, was apprehended in the Kapuk Cengkareng area. Police also recovered the victim’s stolen car. The suspect told police he had intended to sell the stolen vehicle.

“The car was still in the suspect’s possession, but he was planning to arrange a cash-on-delivery sale. The car had been advertised on Facebook, but because we received intelligence, the Tambora Criminal Investigation Unit immediately moved to arrest the suspect,” he explained.

The suspect is known to be unemployed and intended to use the proceeds from selling the victim’s car for his daily living expenses. He has been formally named a suspect and placed in detention.

“He has been charged under Article 477, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment,” he added.

According to Antara, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 11 February, and was captured on surveillance cameras at the scene. In the circulated footage, the victim can be seen lying on the roadside completely unconscious, with his arms spread out and legs bent.

The victim appeared entirely unresponsive to his surroundings. Meanwhile, his black car was parked at the kerb nearby.

Moments later, the suspect appeared within the CCTV’s range. The unidentified individual paced back and forth, passing the victim several times.

After confirming the victim was truly unconscious, the suspect seized the opportunity by entering the victim’s car, which contained valuables. Shortly afterwards, the suspect fled the scene driving the victim’s car.

“The man was so intoxicated he was completely unconscious. His belongings, including his car, were taken by an unknown individual in the Bandengan area, Tambora, West Jakarta,” said Tambora Police Criminal Investigation Unit Officer Ipda Priyo Purnomo, as reported by Antara.
