Police arrest alleged counterfeiter

JAKARTA: Detectives from the East Jakarta Police arrested a suspected counterfeiter on Monday and seized 17 counterfeit Rp 100,000 banknotes.

The suspect, identified as Gentar Doy Bastari, was arrested after the officers pulled over the Suzuki Carry car he was driving. They found the notes in Gentar's pocket, and the suspect admitted that they were counterfeit. He also told the officers that he intended to distribute the money.

During police questioning, Gentar said that he received the money from a man he identified as Iskandar.

According to Gentar, he and Iskandar had distributed 34 counterfeit Rp 100,000 banknotes in Prumpung, East Jakarta.

Gentar has been charged with violating Article 245 of the Criminal Code on counterfeiting. -- JP
