Police Arrest 8 Illegal Parking Attendants in Tanah Abang for Charging Up to Rp100,000
Police have arrested eight men suspected of operating as illegal parking attendants who were charging parking fees of up to Rp100,000 in the Tanah Abang area of Central Jakarta.
Footage of the arrests circulated on social media, including on the Instagram account @gema.jakarta. The video showed several parking attendants being detained by police, with some cooperating during the process whilst others resisted when officers attempted to take them in for questioning.
Tanah Abang Metro Police Chief AKBP Dhimas Prasetyo said the arrests were carried out in response to public reports, aimed at ensuring the comfort and safety of residents.
"The police station has taken action regarding the viral reports to prevent the situation from escalating and to maintain orderly conditions, by bringing in parking attendants suspected of engaging in illegal levies for questioning," Dhimas told reporters on Tuesday (17 February).
Dhimas confirmed that eight illegal parking attendants had been arrested, though he did not yet disclose their identities.
He stated that the eight suspects are currently undergoing intensive questioning at the Tanah Abang Police Station.
"We are examining whether their actions meet the criteria for further legal proceedings or whether guidance and counselling will suffice," he said.
