Polda Metro Jaya has arrested a total of 322 people in connection with a demonstration at the DPR/MPR building on Thursday (27/8).

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said the arrests were made following riots that occurred after the protest on Thursday evening.

“Based on data collection, 322 people have been detained for questioning,” he said at a press conference on Friday (28/8).

He claimed the arrests of hundreds of people were carried out to stop alleged acts of vandalism, damage to public facilities, and to prevent disturbances to public order and security (Kamtibmas) around the location.

Budi said this group allegedly emerged after the protest ended and most of the crowd had left the area. He said they deliberately caused disturbances to public order and even attacked officers.

“After the series of expressions of aspirations ended and most of the crowd left the location, a group of rioters emerged and disrupted the public order situation,” he said.

He detailed that of the hundreds of people arrested, 162 were adults aged 19 to 40 years. Meanwhile, 160 others were categorised as minors aged 12 to 18 years.

Budi said all those arrested are still undergoing examination to determine their respective involvement.

“Up to now, the examination process is still ongoing and no one has been released. We are determining the involvement and role of each individual based on facts and evidence,” he said.

Police also seized various types of sharp weapons and objects that could potentially be used to commit violence, including machetes, scissors, knives, slingshots, arrowheads, iron chains, and four bamboo poles.
