Police arrest 1,000 hoodlums

SEMARANG, Central Java: The police have rounded up about 1,000 street hoodlums in the ongoing operation aimed at suppressing street violence.

"The war against hoodlums continue. We will strike hard but abide by the laws," Central Java and Yogyakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Hariman AS told The Jakarta Post Tuesday.

The operation against street crime in the region has received strong support from citizens in the areas, he said.

Started two weeks ago following the murder by a criminal gang in a Jakarta shopping complex, the operation is aimed to restore citizens' sense of security. (har/29)
