Police Analyse CCTV Footage in Assault on UI Student Executive Board Coordinator
Investigators from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police are analysing CCTV footage as they investigate the alleged assault of University of Indonesia Student Executive Board coordinator Hafidz Hernanda by an unidentified person. Police are also conducting forensic laboratory tests as part of the investigation.
“We are currently analysing CCTV footage, and several additional cameras have been identified. We will ensure that this case is processed through an investigation by the General Crimes Directorate,” Jakarta Metropolitan Police public relations chief, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said after a roll-call ceremony at the National Monument in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (20 October 2026).
Budi said police were continuing efforts to solve the case and would not tolerate any form of violence.
“We hope to achieve significant results and quickly identify the perpetrator and establish what happened. We will not tolerate what happened to this activist, a member of the UI Student Executive Board,” he said.
Budi said investigators needed to reconstruct the sequence of events to identify the perpetrator. The CCTV footage is therefore being processed by a digital forensics laboratory.
“That is why the events need to be pieced together. The CCTV footage is being processed through digital forensic analysis. We need to establish the timeline hour by hour and check whether the footage is real time. This takes time and is an ongoing process,” he said.
“I have asked that investigators be given room to examine the case, including witness statements and physical evidence. We are also awaiting the forensic laboratory results concerning an item believed to have been left behind by the suspected perpetrator,” he added.
Hafidz Hernanda, the UI Student Executive Board coordinator, was allegedly assaulted by an unidentified person and fell from his motorbike in Tebet, South Jakarta. Police are investigating the case even though the victim has not filed a report.
“We are deeply concerned about the attack on a student from the UI Student Executive Board. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police will investigate the incident in Tebet,” Budi said.
