Photographs and videos of suspected perpetrators of the acid attack against KontraS deputy coordinator Andrie Yunus have circulated widely on social media. Police have stated that some of the circulating images are artificially generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

“If colleagues see or receive links or uploads on social media purporting to show the suspect, the suspect’s alleged identity, we can confirm that these are hoaxes or false,” said Metro Jaya Police Detective Division Commander Kombes Iman Imanuddin at a press conference on Monday (16 March 2026).

Police urged the public not to immediately believe the photographs and videos circulating that allegedly show the acid attack perpetrator. The content is believed to have been spread by the perpetrator’s network to obscure the facts.

“With the circulation of this crime scene video, the perpetrators and their network appear to have begun panicking and are attempting to obstruct the investigation process by spreading images or sketches produced by artificial intelligence,” Imanuddin said.

“We suspect this is also one of the measures taken by the network and perpetrators to obscure information and distort the direction of legal facts obtained,” he added.

Police are examining multiple CCTV recordings from around the location related to the attack on Andrie Yunus in Senen, Central Jakarta. Imanuddin stated that these CCTV recordings will serve as investigative material to clarify the case.

“This is very helpful to the investigation and prosecution process we are conducting. Moreover, most locations in the Jakarta area have sufficiently high resolution, so we have obtained fairly clear images in several places,” he said.

Based on available CCTV footage, Imanuddin explained the route of the perpetrators’ arrival and departure during the acid attack. He also mentioned that there are believed to be four perpetrators on two different motorcycles in this case.

“Hopefully, we can soon provide or convey information from the CCTV footage we have obtained along the route believed to have been used as the route of departure or return of the suspected perpetrators,” he said.

KontraS Activist Sustains Burn Injuries

The Indonesian National Police revealed that KontraS deputy coordinator Andrie Yunus sustained burn injuries to several parts of his body after allegedly being splashed with acid by unknown individuals. Andrie sustained injuries to his chest, arm, and face as a result of the incident.

“Central Jakarta Police District (has) requested an initial forensic and medical examination regarding the wound condition of witness victim AY. Several parts of the body were then affected: the chest, face, and hand,” said Police Public Relations Division Head Irjen Johnny Eddizon Isir to journalists at Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday (13 March).

The incident allegedly occurred on Thursday (12 March) at approximately 23:30 western Indonesian time on Jalan Salemba, Senen, Central Jakarta. Police are currently investigating alleged charges of aggravated assault.

“Regarding the alleged crime of aggravated assault, as per Article 467 paragraph 2 and/or Article 468 paragraph 1 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code,” he continued.

Isir conveyed that National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has given special attention to the handling of the case. The matter is being handled by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Central Jakarta Metro Police with support from Metro Jaya Police and the National Police Criminal Investigation Division.
