Police: 41 Indonesian Migrant Workers Still in Libya Yet to Return Home
The General Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimum) of Jakarta Metropolitan Police has stated that 41 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) remain in Libya, and that it will coordinate with all relevant parties on the matter.
“So, there are still around 41 people in the second contract period who have not yet returned, and this will be coordinated by all parties,” said the Deputy Director of General Criminal Investigation at Jakarta Metropolitan Police, AKBP I Dewa Putu Gede Anom Danujaya, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The whereabouts of the 41 individuals are still being coordinated, and they are dispersed according to the work contracts they hold in the countries where they were placed.
Based on the investigation conducted by the National Resources Sub-Directorate (Subdit Kamneg) of Ditreskrimum at Jakarta Metropolitan Police, the two suspects carried out three waves of migrant worker deployments. The first involved 35 people between August 2023 and June 2024.
“They have all returned,” he said.
In the second deployment period, 50 people departed between July 2024 and March 2025, nine of whom were repatriated before their contracts ended.
In the third period, 20 migrant workers were sent between April 2025 and May 2026, with five repatriated before the end of their contracts and three returned yesterday.
He confirmed that all Indonesian migrant workers who had travelled and returned have been examined and are serving as witnesses for officers of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of Jakarta Metropolitan Police.
“Almost all of these migrant workers are women,” he said.
Regarding allegations of sexual violence, the police said it would collaborate once other victims come forward to report and describe their psychological condition, which will then be communicated.
“However, from the examinations we have conducted so far, no instances of sexual violence have been found. Their work there is usually as domestic workers,” he said.
Previously, Ditreskrimum of Jakarta Metropolitan Police disclosed the roles of the two main suspects, R alias Ica and DY, in a human trafficking (TPPO) network that sent Indonesian migrant workers abroad non-procedurally, leading to exploitation in Libya.
The Director of General Criminal Investigation at Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, explained that in uncovering the case, investigators named two suspects, identified by the initials R and DY.
“The suspects’ network is alleged to have sent at least 105 prospective Indonesian migrant workers abroad between 2023 and 2026,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday (31/7).
