Polda Metro Respects Public Protests: Must Be Distinguished from Unlawful Acts
Polda Metro Jaya respects public protest activities that proceeded in an orderly and peaceful manner on 27 August. Police stressed that such activities must be distinguished from unlawful acts that disrupt public order and damage facilities.
“We appreciate members of the public who conveyed their aspirations peacefully and left the location in an orderly manner. Unlawful acts committed after the activity must be clearly distinguished from members of the public exercising their right to express opinions,” said Polda Metro Jaya Head of Public Relations Commissioner Budi Hermanto on Friday (28/8/2026).
Officers took gradual and measured steps to stop the disturbances and prevent their impact from spreading. Police are committed to maintaining public safety.
As part of the handling, officers also secured a number of items whose connection to the incident is still being investigated. Police seized two machetes, two pairs of scissors, one knife sharpener, 10 PVC sheets, one slingshot, 19 arrowheads, one iron chain and four bamboo sticks.
Director of General Criminal Investigation at Polda Metro Jaya Commissioner Iman Imanuddin said 45 people have been named as suspects based on examination results and evidence obtained. They became suspects after committing vandalism, assault and possession of sharp weapons.
“Law enforcement is not directed at members of the public who convey their aspirations peacefully. Legal status is determined based on the role, actions and evidence of each individual,” said Iman.
Director of PPA and PPO Investigation at Polda Metro Jaya Commissioner Rita Wulandari Wibowo assured that the handling of children prioritises the best interests of the child. The process involves social workers, the DKI Jakarta Provincial PPA Technical Implementation Unit, community guidance officers from the Correctional Centre, while maintaining the confidentiality of the children’s identities.
Polda Metro Jaya has also prepared assistance for children who have dropped out of school. For children still in education, guidance will be carried out together with teaching staff and the Education Agency so that the education process continues.
“We will continue to coordinate to ensure that children receive assistance and guidance according to their needs, including in the continuity of their education,” said Rita.
Polda Metro Jaya confirmed that the situation in Jakarta is currently safe and public activities have returned to normal. The public is urged to remain calm and not be easily influenced by unverified information.
