Polda Metro Jaya has successfully uncovered 42 cases of the misuse of the hard drug Etomidate, with the total seized evidence reaching 11,000 cartridges. This operation was conducted as a firm step by the police to curb the circulation of hard drugs that are often misused as substitutes for narcotics. “We have uncovered 42 cases involving the use of the illicit substance Etomidate, with 63 suspects and the seizure of 11,000 cartridges containing Etomidate,” stated Dirresnarkoba Kombes Ahmad David during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4). This revelation is the result of an intensive series of investigations into networks distributing hard drugs in the jurisdiction of Polda Metro Jaya. Etomidate, which should be used as an anaesthetic or sedative under strict medical supervision, has been found to be widely circulated in cartridge form for illegal consumption. The police emphasise that the distribution of Etomidate without permission constitutes a serious violation of the Health Law. The reckless use of this drug is highly dangerous, as it can cause fatal side effects and even death for users. To date, the investigative team is still developing leads to map distribution routes and identify the intellectual actors behind the smuggling and production of those cartridges. “Data is being validated” regarding the details of the identities of the suspects secured in the 42 cases. The public is urged to be vigilant against the circulation of illegal drugs and to immediately report to the authorities if they find suspicious activities related to the distribution of unlicensed pharmaceutical preparations in their environment. Officers found a FedEx package containing 100 grams of the narcotic Etomidate, 1 kilogram of other SLS chemicals, and various laboratory equipment. The National Police Chief has proposed that two compounds, ketamine and Etomidate, be included in the narcotic category. This step is intended so that the misuse of both substances can be subject to criminal sanctions. Vapes or electronic cigarettes have become a popular trend, especially among young people, due to their attractive designs and various liquid flavour options. The Singapore government has banned the use of vapes because the addition of dangerous substances like Etomidate to electronic vaping devices poses serious dangers to users. The Chairman of the Indonesian Public Health Association (IAKMI), dr Iqbal Mochtar, assesses that stricter supervision is needed for the consumption of hard drugs that can be misused.
