The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Directorate of Traffic has strengthened simultaneous surveillance at several high-risk locations within its jurisdiction to prevent wrong-way driving violations and the intentional covering of vehicle licence plates.

This preventive measure follows instructions from the Head of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, and the Director of Traffic, Commissioner Firman Darmansyah, as implemented by the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement, AKBP M Adiel Aristo, to increase officer presence on the ground.

“This step is being taken in response to public complaints regarding the prevalence of motorists driving against the flow of traffic. This behaviour disrupts traffic flow and increases the risk of road accidents,” said Adiel in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He noted that the surveillance and personnel deployment are spread across South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Jakarta, South Tangerang, and the Soekarno-Hatta Airport area.

In relation to traffic safety statistics, the data shows that 24 people died, 34 sustained serious injuries, and 283 sustained minor injuries in recent incidents.

Furthermore, he detailed accident casualty figures, noting 78 people in 2022, 84 in 2023, 68 in 2024, 83 in 2025, and 28 based on ongoing data for 2026.

Adiel emphasised that the surveillance is not solely focused on law enforcement but also prioritises preventive measures through education, public appeals, and direct traffic management.

In addition to wrong-way driving, officers on the ground are also targeting vehicles with obscured or unreadable licence plates using handheld Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) devices.

Through this continuous surveillance, the police hope that public awareness of traffic regulations will increase, recognising that the convenience of driving against the flow is not worth the potential risk of life-threatening accidents.
