Poland Uncovers Alleged Russian Intelligence Operation, Ukrainian Teen Arrested
An 18-year-old Ukrainian teenager has been charged with acting as an accomplice of Russian intelligence services in a sabotage operation in Poland. Prosecutors allege his mission was not merely to scrawl graffiti on walls, but to trigger hostility between two nations that have stood united against Moscow.
Investigators have once again exposed the operational methods of Russian intelligence services, which seek to advance their interests by provoking conflict between the Polish and Ukrainian people, stated Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).
Polish prosecutors on Tuesday charged the teenager, identified as Illia K. in accordance with the country’s privacy rules, with alleged sabotage and diversion activities on behalf of Russian intelligence. According to the ABW, every action carried out by the suspect was designed to stir ethnic sentiment and sharpen historical wounds between Poland and Ukraine.
His targets were chosen with great care. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the Minister Coordinator of Special Services, said Illia K. scrawled inscriptions glorifying the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and nationalist figure Stepan Bandera at several locations of profound significance to Polish society. The graffiti appeared at the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes Monument and the Volhynia Massacre Monument, two symbols that hold bitter memories in Polish history.
For many Poles, the name UPA is synonymous with the massacre of tens of thousands of Polish civilians in the Volhynia and Eastern Galicia regions during the Second World War. Consequently, any symbol perceived to glorify the UPA or Bandera almost always provokes public outrage and becomes a sensitive political issue.
It is at this point that investigators see a larger pattern. According to the ABW, the acts were not ordinary vandalism, but part of an operation allegedly aimed at exploiting historical trauma to damage relations between Poland and Ukraine. Security officials assess that such methods align with the influence operations they have long associated with Russian intelligence services.
However, the accusations against Illia K. do not stop at monument graffiti. Investigators also allege the teenager was planning a sabotage attack using an unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone. Authorities have not yet disclosed the suspected target as the investigation remains ongoing.
