Polish prosecutors have announced that a Belarusian national has been detained on suspicion of conducting espionage in Poland, Germany, and Lithuania.

As reported by AFP on Monday (23/2/2026), the prosecution stated that Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) suspects the man of working for military intelligence in Belarus, a key ally of Russia. The suspect was detained on 9 February.

Prosecutors added that intelligence agencies from Poland, Germany, and Lithuania cooperated in the case.

The investigation is focused on espionage activities “in the territories of Poland, Germany, and Lithuania” between June 2024 and February this year, prosecutors said.

The 27-year-old man, identified only as Pavlov T., monitored “critical infrastructure installations and sites important to the defence of the Republic of Poland and the NATO alliance,” according to the prosecution’s statement.

The suspect has been placed in provisional detention for three months and faces a minimum prison sentence of five years if found guilty.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has regularly accused Russia and Belarus of sabotage and espionage attempts.

In October, Poland’s intelligence services said 55 individuals suspected of working for Russia had been detained since the start of the war.
