Moscow (ANTARA) - Poland and Germany signed a new military cooperation agreement on Wednesday without mutual security guarantees, with defence ministers Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Boris Pistorius attending the ceremony. The document replaces the previous framework agreement on defence cooperation between the two countries that had been in place for 15 years. “We are laying another foundation for security, and there is no European security without Poland or without Germany. Today’s agreement opens new space for cooperation,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said after the signing ceremony. The new agreement provides opportunities for cooperation in cyber security, joint command in the Baltic region, new technologies including space, and opens further possibilities in military mobility and infrastructure development, the Polish defence minister said. Under the agreement, German armed forces engineering troops will support the Polish army in protecting the country’s eastern border, Kosiniak-Kamysz stated. Earlier in the day, Polish media reported that, at Poland’s initiative, the document does not contain security guarantees beyond existing commitments under NATO or European Union treaties. The decision was made by Poland, even though Germany had been ready to sign a broader agreement, the reports revealed. The deal will allow German engineering forces to operate on Polish territory as part of the Eastern Shield operation. In December 2025, Bild reported that the mission would consist of dozens of military personnel tasked with digging trenches, installing barbed wire, and constructing anti-tank barriers.
