POGI Launches SPRIN Campaign to Reduce Maternal Mortality Rates

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s high maternal mortality rate remains a complex challenge for women’s health. Currently, the maternal mortality rate stands at around 189 per 100,000 live births.

Facing this emergency situation, the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association (POGI) has launched the national initiative Selamatkan Perempuan Indonesia (SPRIN).

“Every hour, one mother currently passes away during pregnancy or the childbirth process,” said the General Chairman of the POGI Central Board, Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Wiweko, SpOG, Subsp. FER, during a press conference at the POGI National House, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026).

The Deputy Minister for Population and Family Development, Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka, views women’s health protection as an investment in the future.

“A strong mother will raise quality children, and a quality family is the foundation for achieving Golden Indonesia 2045,” said Isyana.

“Most referrals are delayed, yes, by the time the case arrives, it’s already severe,” said Dr. Budi.

Severe bleeding is the main cause that claims lives in minutes if not treated with standard 30-minute response emergency surgery.

Unfortunately, this issue is exacerbated by the uneven distribution of obstetrics and gynaecology specialists. Jakarta has around 1,000 doctors, while regions like Papua have only 30 to 40 doctors.

The programme also includes pregnancy monitoring, safe childbirth, menopause accompaniment, and national HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.

By preventing anaemia from adolescence, the risk of severe bleeding during future childbirth can be effectively reduced.

“The steps taken by POGI today demonstrate that professional organisations have a very important role,” said Isyana.
