Pocong Figure on Mataram Roof Sparks Theft Fears
A video showing a figure resembling a pocong has caused alarm among residents of Rembiga, Selaparang District, Mataram City. The footage went viral on social media and sparked anxiety because it is suspected to be linked to a theft tactic. In the 21-second circulating clip, a white-clad figure resembling a pocong can be seen on the roof of a resident’s house in the middle of the night. The figure appears to be hopping around while observing residents who are screaming in fear. ‘Yes, ma’am, look at that, look at that, its hands,’ said one resident in the video. The figure’s appearance immediately became a talking point among netizens. Several social media accounts speculated that the act was connected to a theft scheme deliberately staged to intimidate residents. ‘The pocong is carrying a machete, a new type of robber, be careful,’ said the account lanang_bagoes. ‘Heads up Rembiga residents, which part of Rembiga is this? Could it be a theft terror tactic like in Java,’ said the account Syahadatulkhaira. Similarly, the account Sinarkharisma commented, ‘It’s a new tactic. He deliberately wears a pocong costume so that people come out of their houses. That way it becomes easy for him to rob.’ Meanwhile, Nurul, a Rembiga resident, hoped that the appearance of the pocong-like figure was merely a prank and not part of a theft scheme. This follows similar incidents which had also gone viral in several other regions. ‘Hopefully it is just kids messing around, heaven forbid if it is a pocong thief modus operandi,’ she said.
