Jakarta — A student demonstration at the Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) in South Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026 drew attention after a video of a man in a yellow university blazer shouting whilst pointing at a police officer’s face went viral on social media.

The police officer indicated with his initials “S” remained silent and did not react to the confrontation. The man was pulled back by colleagues but moved forward again before being further away by other protesters.

The man, identified as SB, alleged that the police officer had previously assaulted him during a demonstration in late August 2025. “Before Affan Kurniawan was run over, I wanted to enter GBK Arena with 12 friends. He checked us, I asked ‘Are you a police officer?’ He didn’t answer, I was just pushed, knocked to the ground, and beaten,” SB told reporters on Friday.

SB stated that during the previous incident, the alleged officer was not wearing his official uniform. He claimed to have recorded the police officer’s face, suspecting it was the same person who had previously assaulted him.

However, the University of Indonesia (UI) confirmed that the individual in the video was not their student. Erwin Panigoro, UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, stated that the campus had conducted an investigation through the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and the Higher Education Database (PDDIKTI).

“Based on communication and verification with BEM FIA UI and PDDIKTI research, it can be confirmed that the individual in the video is not a UI student,” Erwin said in a written statement on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

UI also objected to the use of the university blazer without authorisation, as it could mislead the public and damage the institution’s reputation.

Politeknik Negeri Jakarta (PNJ) similarly clarified that SB attended the protest personally and was not registered as part of any official student organisation contingent. “The individual captured in the video was not registered in the protest contingent coordinated by PNJ student organisations and was known to have attended personally outside of official coordination,” said a PNJ spokesperson on Monday, 2 March 2026.
