The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) is preparing a large-scale humanitarian operation encompassing logistical aid, health services, and the provision of clean water for residents in need, to assist communities affected by the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

PMI Chairman Jusuf Kalla said in Jakarta on Tuesday that since the onset of the disaster, the organisation has distributed various forms of assistance including emergency tents, food, and health services. Currently, PMI is beginning to focus its response on clean water needs through its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) team.

“Since the beginning, we have been delivering aid to the region, in the form of tents, food, and health services. Now we are considering the WASH team for water and water repairs,” said Jusuf Kalla.

The organisation will also strengthen medical support by sending additional medicines and health workers from several regions, such as Jakarta, Solo, and Surabaya.

“Health teams from Jakarta, Solo, and Surabaya will head to the area. Thus, a fairly large and complete operation will be carried out in NTT to help the people affected by the disaster,” he said.

“Our operation will last approximately two to three months. PMI always operates during the emergency phase. After reconstruction, the government usually carries out the reconstruction, although we will also assist with processes that can be implemented,” he explained.

Regarding obstacles in the field, JK stated that there are no significant hindrances. However, the distance involved in sending aid from areas such as Jakarta and Surabaya presents its own challenge.

In addition to sending aid from the central level, PMI will also strengthen logistics distribution through the nearest regions such as Maumere and other cities around the affected locations so that community needs can be met more quickly.

The organisation has also carried out a rapid response by providing initial assistance, health services, and evacuation support, deploying 84 personnel, seven operational vehicles, and seven ambulances.

PMI has also erected emergency tents to support health facility services for residents affected by the earthquake. Furthermore, PMI has distributed 25,000 litres of clean water, provided psychosocial services to 147 people, and sent logistics including 675 hygiene kits, 1,075 blankets, 1,000 sarongs, 825 mattresses, 710 tarpaulins, 300 mosquito nets, 300 pairs of boots, 220 baby kits, 200 kitchen kits, 120 vests, and 50 mats.

PMI headquarters has also provided initial operational funding support to PMI NTT amounting to Rp146,690,000.
