PMI prepares for returning workers

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) is preparing activities and programs to help anticipate a massive influx of Indonesian workers from Malaysia after the neighboring country ended its amnesty period for the undocumented workers late last month.

The organization said that it had sent doctors and nurses to a number of entry points, such as Nunukan in Kalimantan, to assist sick workers that could reach up to 300 people daily.

PMI is also setting up water distribution and water purification centers and will provide hygiene kits, health services and medicine for thousands of workers, who have to stay in poorly-equipped camps while preparing their immigration documents to gain work legally in Malaysia. -- JP
