PM Modi welcomes integration of India's UPI with Indonesia's QRIS payment system

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the plan to integrate India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia’s QRIS payment system. Speaking during a joint press statement at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, Modi said the integration would enhance people-to-people interactions and boost economic transactions between the two countries. “One of the greatest strengths of our relationship is people-to-people ties. We are very pleased that India’s digital payment system, UPI, will be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system. This will make it easier for businesses and citizens of both countries,” Modi said. If successfully implemented, Indonesia’s QRIS payment codes could be used for transactions in India, while QR codes from India’s Unified Payments Interface ecosystem could be used in Indonesia. President Prabowo Subianto stated that the cross-border QR payment linkage would improve transaction efficiency and strengthen financial sector resilience. The payment system integration was one of the key agendas discussed during the bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and PM Modi at the Merdeka Palace. The two leaders also discussed accelerating the Indonesia–India Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and reviewing the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA). Beyond finance and trade, the talks covered cooperation in energy, research, innovation, education, and health. “Amid the current global situation, we are also encouraging cooperation in energy security, including the development of solar power plant projects, technology exchange, and capacity building in nuclear technology,” President Prabowo said.
