Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that his country will strive to build a more inclusive world order during a meeting with the foreign ministers of the BRICS organisation in New Delhi on Thursday (14/5). Modi expressed pleasure in interacting with the foreign ministers and heads of delegations from BRICS member countries attending the bloc’s foreign ministers’ meeting on Thursday and Friday. He said BRICS has emerged as an important platform to advance cooperation among developing countries and voice the aspirations of the Global South. “Under India’s leadership this year, we (BRICS) will work together to strengthen multilateralism, promote sustainable development, enhance economic resilience, and build a more inclusive world order,” Narendra Modi stated. Separately, according to a statement from the Indian Government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with PM Modi to exchange views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent stance in favour of dialogue and diplomacy as the best way forward, according to a statement from the Indian presidential office issued on Thursday (14/5). The bloc is working to develop alternative financial mechanisms, reduce dependence on the US dollar, increase representation of Southern countries in international institutions, and challenge Western-led governance structures. India’s BRICS chairmanship this year carries the theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability”. BRICS member countries encompass more than 40 per cent of the global population and over 32 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
