PM Modi: Democracy is the Foundation of India-Indonesia Development
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the shared democratic values that serve as the foundation for development in both India and Indonesia.
Speaking before members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta, Modi noted that as the world’s first and third-largest democracies, India and Indonesia believe that diversity is a strength for progress.
“Through reforms, Indonesia has shown the world the true power of democracy,” Modi said.
He observed that over the past two decades, Indonesia’s economy has grown rapidly, lifting millions out of poverty. Similarly, India has liberated more than 200 million of its citizens from poverty during the same period.
Modi expressed strong confidence that shared democratic values and common aspirations will elevate India-Indonesia relations to a new level, as democracy creates opportunities, instils trust, and builds the future.
He specifically highlighted significant progress in economic cooperation, with bilateral trade reaching nearly USD 25 billion last year.
Looking ahead, Modi encouraged the development of cooperation in various other potential sectors, including space technology, maritime connectivity, counter-terrorism, and cultural exchange.
“As Indonesia moves towards the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, India is working towards Viksit Bharat 2047. We can be partners in realising these aspirations,” PM Modi stated.
