PM Modi Confident Indian Tourist Numbers to Prambanan Temple Will Surge Following Revitalisation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes the conservation cooperation for Prambanan Temple will have a significant impact on increasing visits by tourists and pilgrims from India to Indonesia. He stated that the revitalisation of the UNESCO World Heritage site would further strengthen Prambanan’s position as a cultural and spiritual destination with close ties to Indian civilisation. The statement was made by Modi during the launch of the Prambanan Temple conservation cooperation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Prambanan Temple complex in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Modi assessed that the ongoing renovation work on the temple complex would enhance Prambanan’s appeal to the Indian public. ‘And I see that this magnificent temple complex, we are carrying out renovation work. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I can assure you, after our joint efforts in this renovation, the number of tourists and religious adherents from India will grow exponentially in the future,’ he explained. According to Modi, Hindu temples around the world always represent the living culture and heritage of India across nations. ‘In any temple around the world, we can catch a glimpse of Indian culture and heritage,’ Modi stated. During his visit to Prambanan, Modi also worshipped at the temple complex, which is the largest centre of Hindu worship in Indonesia. He said he was honoured to pray at one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia. ‘Today, here, I had the honour of offering prayers at the second-largest Hindu temple complex in Southeast Asia. I have seen the sacred statues of Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha. For centuries, devotees have worshipped here with deep faith and devotion,’ he said. For Modi, the opportunity to worship directly at Prambanan was a deeply memorable spiritual experience during his state visit to Indonesia. ‘Today, I also had the honour of offering prayers in the most traditional way and paying my respects at this holy temple. This is one of the most sacred, most extraordinary, and devoted moments of my life,’ he asserted.
