PM Lawrence Wong Optimistic About Indonesia's Future, Commits to Strengthening Investment

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong affirmed his optimism about Indonesia’s future in a joint press statement following a Leaders’ Retreat with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (6/7/2026). He stated that a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and understanding forms a strong foundation to elevate the Indonesia-Singapore partnership to a higher level. “Singapore has confidence in Indonesia’s future. We want Indonesia to succeed because our futures are interconnected,” PM Wong said. PM Wong noted that this optimism is reflected in Singapore’s consistent investment in Indonesia over the years. He explained that investment not only brings capital flows but also drives economic growth through industry creation, digital infrastructure development, and job creation. “These investments are not just capital flows. They create businesses, downstream industries, digital infrastructure, opportunities, and jobs for the Indonesian people. Our companies continue to see many opportunities in Indonesia,” he said. As an example, PM Wong highlighted the rapid development of the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK) area, which is evolving into a digital economy hub and increasingly attracting global investor interest. He also cited the Kendal Industrial Park as a success story of Indonesia-Singapore cooperation. The industrial park, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, has reached full capacity and will be expanded by approximately 1,000 hectares to accommodate new investment and create more jobs. Beyond investment, PM Wong said both countries are committed to strengthening supply chain resilience as a joint measure to face various global challenges. “We are committed to strengthening supply chain resilience so that both countries can better support each other in facing various external shocks,” he said. In closing, PM Wong emphasised that Indonesia and Singapore share a vision to continue opening new cooperation opportunities that can enhance the competitiveness of both nations while strengthening the ASEAN region. “By working together, we can create more opportunities for our people, strengthen resilience, and make both our countries and the ASEAN region more competitive,” he concluded.
