PM Lawrence Wong Arrives in Jakarta, Set to Meet Prabowo Today
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officially arrived in Jakarta on Sunday evening (5/7/2026) to attend the Indonesia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat today, Monday (6/7/2026). The visit serves as a momentum to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries amidst global geopolitical dynamics.
Foreign Minister Sugiono, along with several members of the Red and White Cabinet, welcomed Wong upon his arrival at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. The Foreign Ministry stated that PM Wong’s arrival aims to strengthen bilateral relations and optimise cooperation potential across various sectors that can be enhanced by both nations.
In addition to reinforcing bilateral ties, the government noted that the leaders’ meeting will also discuss the latest geopolitical developments and their impact on the region. President Prabowo is scheduled to host Wong for the Indonesia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat.
The Leaders’ Retreat is the highest-level annual bilateral forum between Indonesia and Singapore, bringing together the heads of government and their senior ministers. This year’s meeting is the second for Prabowo and Wong, following their previous encounter in Singapore in June 2025.
The Singapore Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that the Leaders’ Retreat is an opportunity to reaffirm the close bilateral relationship that has been built over nearly six decades. “The Leaders’ Retreat reaffirms the deep and enduring bilateral relationship between Singapore and Indonesia, and the commitment of both governments to deepen bilateral cooperation,” the PMO said, as quoted by the Straits Times.
During the meeting, the two leaders will review the progress of various cooperation projects agreed upon since the previous retreat. Prabowo and Wong are also scheduled to exchange views on regional and global issues, while exploring new cooperation opportunities across various sectors.
Indonesia-Singapore cooperation is now expanding beyond traditional sectors such as trade, investment, and defence. Both countries are also broadening collaboration in the green economy, cross-border electricity trading, carbon capture and storage (CCS), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital connectivity.
Economic relations between the two countries continue to show a positive trend. Throughout 2025, Singapore remained the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for Indonesia, with a value reaching US$17.4 billion (equivalent to Rp311.5 trillion). This reinforces the country’s position as one of Indonesia’s most strategic economic partners.
During his visit to Jakarta, Wong is accompanied by several senior Singaporean ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli, and Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng. While Wong is in Indonesia, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam has been appointed as Acting Prime Minister of Singapore.
