PM Goh makes visit to China

SINGAPORE (Reuter): Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong will make a working visit to China for 10 days from today to meet his Chinese counterpart, Li Peng, and other Chinese leaders.

The prime minister's office said in a statement on Tuesday that Goh will deliver a keynote speech at the Asia Society International Corporate Conference on May 13 in Peking.

A Singapore business delegation comprising 72 representatives from 53 companies will join Goh during his visit to Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan and Shanghai.

A government statement said Singapore's cumulative investments in China reached an all-time high of US$8.6 billion last year, making the island nation China's fifth largest foreign investor.

The number of investment projects undertaken was up to 4,565 at the end of 1994. China is currently Singapore's 10th largest trading partner, the statement said. Bilateral trade in 1994 amounted to S$7.6 billion ($5.5 billion).
