Washington (ANTARA) - Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that the Canadian government has a variety of options at its disposal if the United States follows through on threats to impose additional tariffs.

Carney previously declared his readiness to do whatever is necessary to defend the interests of Canadians amid the trade war with the US.

His remarks came after the US threatened to impose an additional 50 percent tariff on Canada starting 19 August, over alleged discriminatory treatment of American-made products.

Although Canada could respond immediately to the tariff threat, Carney added that such a move would not be made, as it would be counterproductive to trade negotiations with the US.

Nevertheless, Carney said all provincial and territorial leaders in Canada have reached a consensus on the direction, objectives, and seriousness of the government’s response to the threat.

“I am confident, and we must all be confident, the team in Canada must be confident, and the provincial leaders must be confident that a deal is truly worth the paper it is written on,” Carney said.

Carney reiterated that Canada is indeed intensifying discussions with the United States to reach a comprehensive agreement covering all sectors related to tariffs.
