PM Anwar Expresses Concern Over Philippines Earthquake, States Malaysia Ready to Provide Aid
Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed profound concern over the strong earthquake that occurred in the Philippines on Monday morning. In a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar stated that Malaysia is prepared to provide any necessary aid required by the Philippines.
“I wish to express my deep concern regarding the strong earthquake that occurred off the southern coast of the Philippines this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Filipino people. Malaysia is ready to provide whatever assistance is needed,” said Anwar Ibrahim.
He emphasised that Malaysia and the Philippines are close friends and partners within ASEAN. Anwar offered prayers for the safety of all those affected and expressed hope that the victims are granted strength and fortitude in facing the difficult days ahead.
Furthermore, PM Anwar noted the impact of the earthquake felt by some communities in Malaysia, where tremors were felt in several regions of Sabah. He reassured the Malaysian public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and that emergency services are currently on full alert.
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9, at a depth of 50 km, was detected in Mindanao, Philippines, on Monday morning at 07:37 local time. The earthquake was centred at coordinates 5.7 degrees North Latitude and 125.1 degrees East Longitude. Tremors were also felt in several areas around Tawau and Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia, as well as in several regions in Indonesia. Authorities in both Indonesia and Malaysia have issued warnings regarding the potential for tsunamis in several coastal areas near the Philippines.
