Penang, Malaysia (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his condolences on the passing of former Timor-Leste President Francisco Guterres. “I mourn the passing of former Timor-Leste President Francisco Guterres. On behalf of Malaysia, I extend my condolences to his family and to all the people,” Anwar said in a statement quoted in Penang, Malaysia, on Monday. Malaysian media reported that Francisco Guterres died in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday at the age of 71, after receiving medical treatment. Anwar noted that President Guterres was part of the generation that successfully led Timor-Leste to independence. Guterres spent years in the resistance struggle, where he was known by the name Lú-Olo, and later served his country as President of the National Parliament and as Head of State. “Throughout his service, he remained steadfast in fighting for the freedom of his people and building a democratic nation,” Anwar said. “Malaysia mourns together with the people of Timor-Leste over his passing. He will always be remembered in Malaysia with great respect and affection,” he added.
