Plywood firm fires 1,100 workers

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: A troubled plywood company has
finally decided to lay off all its 1,100 workers after retaining
them on the payroll for over a year without any activity.

PT Hartaty Jaya Plywood has been given the go-ahead by the
East Kalimantan office of the Ministry of Manpower to sack the
workers on condition that they pay severance pay, Antara
reported.

Hartaty has had to follow in the footsteps of two other
plywood companies in the city, PT Dayak Besar and PT Marina Aneka
Plywood, which have also ceased operations due to difficulties in
securing raw materials. (rms)
