PLN's Sabira Island Conservation Programme Wins National Award
PT PLN (Persero) Greater Jakarta Main Distribution Unit (UID) has received the “Platinum Alignment” accolade at the Indonesia Green Awards 2026 for its Sabira Island conservation programme in the Thousand Islands, which integrates environmental preservation with community empowerment.
General Manager of PLN UID Jakarta Raya, Moch Andy Adchaminoerdin, said the award recognised the implementation of the company’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme, which not only protects coastal ecosystems but also strengthens the local economy, builds the capacity of the younger generation, and expands digital technology access on Sabira Island.
“This award is an appreciation of PLN’s commitment to delivering a TJSL programme that not only protects the environment but also creates tangible benefits for coastal communities,” Andy said in Jakarta on Monday.
He said that for PLN, sustainability is not only about maintaining a reliable electricity supply, but also ensuring that the company’s presence brings wider benefits to society.
“Through the Sabira Island Conservation Programme, we strive to deliver solutions that touch on environmental, economic and community capacity-building aspects, so that people can grow independently and sustainably,” he said.
He explained that the Sabira Island Conservation Programme has been running since 2022 as part of PLN’s commitment to supporting sustainable development on Indonesia’s outer islands.
The programme integrates marine ecosystem preservation, community economic strengthening, digital technology utilisation, and capacity building for the younger generation.
According to him, the programme is aligned with ISO 26000 standards and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
On the environmental front, PLN and the local community have planted 2,000 mangrove seedlings and transplanted 1,600 coral seedlings to protect coastal ecosystems and marine habitats.
“At the same time, public internet access has been provided to open up access to information and reduce the isolation of Sabira Island’s residents,” he said.
From an economic perspective, the programme has helped fishermen improve efficiency through the use of conservation fish aggregating devices (rumpon), which cut fuel consumption by up to 66 per cent, from around 30 litres to 10 litres per fishing trip.
PLN has also supported the development of the Menara Sabira SME through the modernisation of seafood processing, giving processed marine products a longer shelf life and higher added value.
The company has also encouraged the emergence of an environmentally conscious younger generation through training members of the Karang Taruna youth organisation as eco-tourism guides, as well as applying the “Trainers Create Trainers” method so that the community can continue to develop and disseminate conservation education independently.
“The success of this programme is reflected in the full independence achieved by the young people of the Sabira Island Karang Taruna as the frontline guardians of the environment. We hope this integrated conservation model can serve as a reference and be replicated in other locations,” he said.
PLN UID Jakarta Raya received the award after running its Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme, “Sabira Island Conservation: Sabira Green and Digital Lighthouse Island”.
The award was presented directly by La Tofi, Chairman of the La Tofi School of Social Responsibility, in Jakarta on Wednesday (29/7).
The Indonesia Green Awards is an accolade given by the La Tofi School of Social Responsibility to companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to the environment through creative initiatives, or to anyone deemed to have achieved distinction and rendered service to their surrounding environment.
The La Tofi School of Social Responsibility, which has organised the Indonesia Green Awards since its inception in 2009, has successfully encouraged national companies to protect the environment and empower communities from Sabang to Merauke.
