PLN's Sabira Island Conservation Programme Wins National Award

PT PLN (Persero) Unit Induk Distribusi (UID) Jakarta Raya’s efforts to preserve the environment while empowering the community on Sabira Island, Thousand Islands, have received national recognition. Through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme ‘Konservasi Pulau Sabira: Sabira Green and Digital Lighthouse Island’, PLN UID Jakarta Raya achieved a Platinum Predicate with a score of 95.5 and was named a CEPI Champion Candidate at the Indonesia Green Awards 2026, organised by the La Tofi School of Social Responsibility. The Indonesia Green Awards is a recognition given by the La Tofi School of Social Responsibility to companies that demonstrate high environmental awareness through various creative initiatives, or to any party deemed to have made significant contributions to the environment. PLN UID Jakarta Raya General Manager Moch. Andy Adchaminoerdin stated that the award is an appreciation of PLN’s commitment to delivering TJSL programmes that not only protect the environment but also create tangible benefits for coastal communities. ‘For PLN, sustainability is not just about maintaining a reliable electricity supply, but also ensuring our presence provides broader benefits to the community. Through the Sabira Island Conservation Programme, we strive to deliver solutions that touch on environmental and economic aspects, as well as community capacity building, so they can grow independently and sustainably,’ Andy said. The Sabira Island Conservation Programme has been running since 2022 as part of PLN’s commitment to supporting sustainable development on Indonesia’s outer islands. The programme integrates marine ecosystem conservation, community economic strengthening, digital technology utilisation, and youth capacity building. The programme is aligned with ISO 26000 standards and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). In the environmental sector, PLN and the community have planted 2,000 mangrove seedlings and transplanted 1,600 coral reef fragments to preserve the coastal ecosystem and marine life habitats. Public internet access has also been provided to open up information access and reduce the isolation of the Sabira Island community. From an economic perspective, the programme helps fishermen improve efficiency through the use of conservation fish aggregating devices, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 66 percent, from around 30 litres to 10 litres per fishing trip. PLN has also assisted the development of UMKM Menara Sabira by modernising the processing of marine products, so that processed seafood has a longer shelf life and higher added value. Furthermore, PLN has encouraged the emergence of an environmentally conscious young generation through training for Karang Taruna as ecotourism guides and the implementation of the Trainers Create Trainers method, enabling the community to independently develop and disseminate conservation education.
