PLN's Gas Supply for Power Plants Sufficient for 12 Days of Operation
PT PLN (Persero) has revealed that the gas supply for its power generation needs is currently in a safe condition, with an average reserve of 12 days of operation (HOP). The reliability of this primary energy supply forms part of the company’s strategy to maintain the stability of the national electricity system amid efforts to transition to domestic energy. PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, explained that the delivery of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for power plants is routinely scheduled without interruptions. The company also appreciates the coordination with relevant ministries, which helps ensure the availability of gas supplies to support electricity reliability for the public. “The HOP or days of operation for gas reserves averages around 12 days, meaning that in general, LNG deliveries are scheduled and there are no significant obstacles. For this reason, we appreciate and thank the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources for its support in fulfilling national gas needs for PLN’s power plants, as it has been well maintained,” Darmawan clarified during a Hearing with Commission VII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Monday (13/4/2026). In addition to gas, the company notes that coal stocks for power plants as of April 2026 are also maintained at 15.9 days of operation. This condition strengthens the capacity of the national electricity system, which has reached 71 Gigawatts (GW) with a reserve margin of 39%, considered more than sufficient to support economic growth. “Net capacity of 71 Gigawatts, reserve margin around 39%, so the national electricity supply is in a reliable condition. And this is very important to support the continuity of economic growth and public needs,” he stated. The company is currently focusing on implementing government directives to shift from imported-based energy to domestic-based energy to achieve energy self-sufficiency. One priority is reducing the use of fuel oil in the electricity sector at 741 Diesel Power Plant (PLTD) locations spread across Indonesia. “PLN has also planned to reduce fuel oil consumption in the electricity sector at 741 diesel power plant locations, with a total of around 2,139 diesel engines. Of course, we are considering whether there are pico hydro or micro hydro options available at those locations,” he revealed. This is also supported by plans to build a green enabling supergrid transmission spanning 48,000 circuit kilometres in the 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). This infrastructure is designed to channel the potential of new renewable energy (EBT) in remote areas to electricity demand centres. “How to transform energy based on imports and replace it with energy based on domestic strength. This is the main topic in accelerating the energy transition, not just shifting from fossil to renewable energy, but more importantly, energy independence and self-sufficiency,” he emphasised.
