PLN Secures Additional 16 Million Tonnes of Coal Supply Until End of 2026

State electricity firm PT PLN (Persero) has revealed that the company will receive an additional 16.8 million tonnes of coal supply until the end of 2026. This is to meet the coal needs of Steam Power Plants (PLTU) which had faced constraints some time ago. PLN’s Director of Generation Management, Rizal Calvary, stated that the additional coal supply would increase the company’s power supply capacity. The company is currently focusing on coordinating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to ensure smooth coal distribution. “The 16 million tonnes is until the end of the year, so we can optimise additional power that was previously not optimal, there could be an additional 5 Giga Watts to strengthen the Jamali (Java, Madura-Bali) system,” he said when met at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, Thursday (2/7/2026). The additional coal volume was obtained through the optimisation of regular contracts and the diversion of coal allocations previously intended for export. This stock increase is projected to boost power capacity by up to 5 Giga Watts (GW) to guarantee electricity stability for the public. “To increase by around 5 Giga from our usual supply. So there is an additional 5 Giga. If there is an additional 5 Giga, it means our reserves are strong,” he added. With this, the company is committed to continuously striving for the best performance to minimise the risk of future electricity system disruptions. The company ensures that primary energy stock monitoring will continue to be carried out daily to maintain operational levels at a safe threshold. “Safe, it’s there. Everything is there. We are only human, we try, but there are always factors beyond our control, but we at PLN strive to do our best,” Rizal concluded. Previously, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that from August to December 2026, PLN would receive an additional supply of 3 million tonnes of coal per month on top of the existing supply contracts. In July 2026, PLN had also obtained an additional coal allocation of 1.8 million tonnes. “Of course, we continue to maintain and improve this condition together through a system reliability strengthening programme planned according to the direction of the Minister of ESDM,” said Darmawan during a Hearing Meeting with Commission XII of the DPR RI, Thursday (2/7/2026). He explained that the additional supply is specifically for coal with a calorific value above 4,500 kcal/kg required by PLN’s power plants. This supply can increase the reliability of the electricity system in Java with an additional supply capacity of around 5 Giga Watts (GW), bringing the total supply capacity up from the previous 35.9 GW. “This is 1.8 million tonnes on top of the existing supply for July and 3 million tonnes per month from August to December, so there is an additional supply capacity of 5 GW on top of 35.9 GW, which certainly makes the electricity system in Java much more reliable,” he said. According to Darmawan, this step was taken after PLN and the Ministry of ESDM evaluated changes in the composition of national coal production. In recent years, low-calorie coal production has increased, while medium to high-calorie coal production has actually declined. “Therefore, the Ministry of ESDM and PLN corrected this by providing a specific supply of medium to high-calorie coal on top of the existing supply,” he said.
