PLN Responds to Viral Complaints Regarding Surging Electricity Bills
Customers of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) have taken to social media to complain about electricity bills doubling despite no significant change in their household usage patterns. Based on uploaded screenshots, one customer’s bill rose to Rp 712,000 for 512 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in June 2026, compared to just Rp 348,140 for 250 kWh in May 2026. The customer noted that they had monitored their usage mid-month and found it to be within normal limits, questioning the surge in the absence of any announced tariff hikes.
Gregorius Adi Trianto, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and CSR at PT PLN, responded to the complaints by asserting that there has been no increase in electricity tariffs and that PLN is operating in accordance with government regulations. “Regarding the widespread information on social media concerning complaints about rising electricity bills, PT PLN (Persero) emphasises that there has been no increase in electricity tariffs,” Greg stated on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
He added that PLN continues to implement electricity tariff policies as determined by the government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), and that tariffs for the April-June 2026 period remain unchanged from the previous period. According to Greg, the increase in bills experienced by some customers may be influenced by changes in electricity consumption patterns due to factors such as weather conditions, rising temperatures, and increased household activities leading to higher daily use of electrical appliances.
Customers are encouraged to use the PLN Mobile application to monitor and manage their electricity usage more efficiently. The application allows users to check usage history by selecting the “Token and Payment” menu and entering their Customer ID. Furthermore, PLN advises customers to use electricity safely and wisely, which includes regular inspections of home electrical installations and unplugging unused electronic devices to keep energy consumption under control.
