PLN reports Indonesia has a hydrogen surplus of 125 tonnes

State electricity firm PT PLN (Persero) has reported that Indonesia has an annual hydrogen surplus of 125 tonnes, as only 75 tonnes of the 200 tonnes produced are currently being used. “We produce 200 tonnes, 75 tonnes are used. The remaining 125 tonnes are idle,” said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo at the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday. Darmawan explained that every PLN power plant produces hydrogen, which is used in the plants’ cooling systems. However, only 75 tonnes are utilised, resulting in a surplus of 125 tonnes. To make use of this surplus, one of the steps being taken is the construction of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS). “Where does the supply chain come from? We (PLN) are collaborating with Pertamina. So, the Hydrogen Refuelling Station is already there and ready for use. But the vehicles are not yet available,” Darmawan said. In an effort to boost utilisation of the surplus hydrogen, Darmawan asked Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to communicate with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung regarding the use of hydrogen as fuel for TransJakarta buses. “Perhaps you, Sir (Bahlil), could lobby the Jakarta Governor. TransJakarta,” Darmawan suggested. He also revealed that discussions have been held with vehicle manufacturers from Japan, Germany, and China regarding the availability of hydrogen buses. Should the government decide to use hydrogen as a fuel for the transport sector, such as TransJakarta, Darmawan said PLN will collaborate with Pertamina to provide the hydrogen-powered bus fleet. “Later, Pertamina and PLN will jointly provide the buses. Then the hydrogen buses will bear the logos of the Energy Ministry, PLN, and Pertamina; we will collaborate to build hydrogen-based transport,” Darmawan stated.
