Jakarta — PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Greater Jakarta Distribution Unit (UID) predicts that electricity consumption in Jakarta and its surroundings will decline during the upcoming Eid holiday.

“Based on previous Eid experiences, the peak load in Greater Jakarta actually decreases rather than increases,” said Moch. Andy Adchaminoerdin, General Manager of PLN UID Greater Jakarta, when contacted in Jakarta on Sunday.

The decline is expected to occur because many residents of the capital will leave Jakarta to return to their hometowns for Eid homecoming (mudik).

Andy reported that the current average peak electricity load in Greater Jakarta is above 5,000 megawatts (MW). However, during Eid, this figure is estimated to drop to approximately 2,000 MW.

“Many residents will leave their homes to return to their hometowns, so household electricity consumption and office activities in the capital will also decrease,” said Andy.

Although the electricity load will decrease, Andy stated that PLN is actually increasing its vigilance and operational preparedness. Andy noted that low-load conditions require special attention because the electrical system typically operates more frequently under high-load conditions.

“It is precisely during this low-load period that we are more cautious and on higher alert. Because we are accustomed to operating under high loads, suddenly transitioning to low loads presents challenges. Therefore, we are maintaining full personnel readiness,” said Andy.

Additionally, PLN is opening a monitoring post at the Greater Jakarta Distribution Unit office to anticipate potential power disruptions.

Monitoring posts and charging stations

PLN is also establishing monitoring posts at several strategic locations expected to be used by those travelling home, particularly electric vehicle users. These posts are placed at several Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU).

Several locations serving as monitoring points include the Gambir area, Rest Area at KM 10 and KM 6, and routes towards Bintaro. PLN personnel will be stationed at these locations to assist the public requiring electric vehicle charging services.

Andy assured electric vehicle users that they need not worry during their homecoming journey. If they experience difficulties whilst charging their vehicles, users can contact PLN’s hotline or visit the monitoring posts that have been established.

Checking home electrical installations

Prior to this, PLN UID Greater Jakarta urged residents who will undertake the Eid 2026 homecoming journey to check the condition of electrical installations in their homes to ensure they are safe before leaving.

This measure is important to prevent potential hazards such as electrical short circuits or other risks whilst homes are vacant.

Additionally, Andy reminded residents to switch off or disconnect electrical appliances that are not needed to prevent potential electrical disruptions that could trigger fires or damage to installations.

Residents should also pay attention to the condition of electrical cables inside their homes. Cables that pose potential dangers should be secured immediately, particularly cables on floors or those using cable rollers.
