PLN Partners with The Climate Group to Develop Green Energy Products
State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero), or PLN, is stepping up the development of green energy products by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with The Climate Group, which runs RE100. The agreement was signed on Tuesday (6 October) during the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2026 in Jakarta.
The collaboration is intended to support domestic investment as businesses’ demand for reliable and transparent sustainable energy grows.
Presidential Special Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo said Indonesia’s strategic position and abundant domestic resources could help attract green investment.
“We are a peace-loving nation that attracts investors and friends from all over the world. Indonesia is blessed with geothermal resources, sunshine and water resources, including hydropower. We have many energy sources that are part of the sustainable sector,” Hashim said.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said renewable energy resources must be harnessed to support economic growth and attract investment. He described the partnership with The Climate Group as a strategic step towards matching global companies’ demand for renewable energy with the green energy solutions developed by PLN.
“PLN does not only provide electricity; it is also building an energy ecosystem that can meet the needs of investment and industrial growth,” Darmawan said in a statement on Wednesday (7 October).
Demand for green energy is continuing to rise. In 2025, PLN had 18,715 customers for its Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), with energy volume totalling 6.43 terawatt hours (TWh). That was up from 7,354 customers and 5.38 TWh in 2024.
REC demand comes from sectors including mining, manufacturing, chemicals, pulp and paper, food, and data centres.
“Alongside reliable electricity, businesses now need power that is greener, transparent and globally accountable. We want to ensure that we can meet industry’s green energy needs with credible solutions, while making the most of Indonesia’s renewable energy resources to generate sustainable economic growth,” Darmawan said.
PLN Retail and Commerce Director M. Fahrur Rozy said The Climate Group, an international organisation promoting renewable energy use and representing more than 400 global companies through RE100, would help strengthen Indonesia’s green energy ecosystem and support customers’ evolving needs.
“Through our partnership with The Climate Group, we aim to strengthen the link between growing demand for green energy and the development of renewable energy solutions in Indonesia, while opening up new investment opportunities,” Rozy said.
Rozy said the MoU would cover identifying the renewable energy needs of RE100 members already operating or planning to invest in Indonesia, as well as developing green energy products through a range of initiatives.
“We will develop green energy products through studies, technical assistance and human resource capacity-building. The collaboration will also cover studies on implementing Carbon Economic Value (NEK), improving the transparency and credibility of emissions calculations in Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) transactions, and electricity policy research,” Rozy said.
The Climate Group Chief Executive Helen Clarkson said Indonesia had significant potential to become a major force in renewable energy. Realising that potential, however, would require business investment in clean energy projects and ensuring a reliable, affordable supply of renewable electricity.
“Indonesia has all the potential to become a major renewable energy power, but unlocking it requires substantial business investment in new clean energy projects. We are excited to work with our members and PLN to help deliver the energy security, competitiveness and economic growth that renewable energy can bring to Indonesia,” Helen said.
