State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has announced it is operating 143 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) spread across 94 locations throughout Bali to support the mobility of electric vehicles. PLN UID Bali General Manager Eric Rossi Priyo Nugroho stated in Denpasar on Thursday that the readiness of this infrastructure demonstrates PLN’s commitment to supporting the government’s programme to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, while also meeting the needs of a public increasingly shifting towards environmentally friendly transport modes. By June 2026, PLN and its partners will have presented a total of 196 SPKLU units across various areas of Bali. Of that number, 143 units are operated by PLN, while 53 units are managed by partners to expand access to EV charging services on the Island of the Gods. “PLN is ready to support the acceleration of electric vehicle use in Bali. In terms of electricity supply and charging infrastructure, we continue to strengthen our capacity so that the public feels more comfortable using electric vehicles in their daily activities,” he said. According to Eric, Bali’s electricity system still has sufficient reserve power to support the growth of electric vehicles. With the expanding SPKLU network, EV users can now find charging facilities on average every 30 kilometres across Bali. “With the infrastructure currently available, electric vehicle users need not worry when travelling in Bali. On average, every 30 kilometres the public can find an SPKLU to charge their vehicles,” he said. The strengthening of EV infrastructure was also a topic of discussion in a Focus Group Discussion and Business Forum on Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Infrastructure held by PLN UID Bali together with the Bali Provincial Government. The forum brought together representatives from ministries, local government, business actors, and various stakeholders to discuss the acceleration of EV infrastructure development. Head of the Bali Provincial Manpower, Energy and Mineral Resources Agency Ida Bagus Setiawan said the development of electric vehicles is an important part of realising Bali as a quality and sustainable tourism destination. Currently, the number of four-wheeled electric vehicles in Bali has exceeded 4,000 units, while two-wheeled electric vehicles are approaching 12,000 units. According to him, this growth must be balanced with adequate charging infrastructure so that more people switch to electric vehicles. “The development of charging infrastructure is one of the keys to increasing public confidence in switching to electric vehicles. Therefore, synergy between the government, PLN, and business actors needs to be continuously strengthened so that the growth of the electric vehicle ecosystem in Bali can run optimally,” he said. He also appreciated PLN’s efforts in expanding the SPKLU network, including the operation of an SPKLU centre on Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Denpasar, which provides various fast-charging services and is one of the most comprehensive EV charging facilities in eastern Indonesia. Through the forum, participants also discussed strategies for developing EV infrastructure, ranging from licensing aspects, spatial planning, and investment opportunities to business cooperation models. The outcomes of the discussions are expected to accelerate the construction of SPKLU while strengthening the EV ecosystem that supports national energy transition targets and realises Bali as a sustainable green tourism destination.
