PLN Indonesia Power develops low-emissions co-firing
Jakarta (ANTARA) – PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) is developing the co-firing of power plants with hydrogen and ammonia to promote more efficient, lower-emissions generation.
PLN Indonesia Power President Director Bernadus Sudarmanta said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Wednesday that the company was continuing to strengthen its commitment to supporting the national energy transition by developing innovative, more efficient and lower-emissions power-generation technologies.
One initiative involves testing hydrogen co-firing at gas-fired power plants and ammonia co-firing at steam power plants (PLTUs), in an effort to reduce fossil fuel use and promote decarbonisation.
“ This innovation is part of PLN Indonesia Power’s efforts to optimise generation technology while exploring alternative fuels that support the sustainability of the national electricity system,” Bernadus said.
The tests involve blending hydrogen gas with natural gas to fuel power-generation engines, replacing part of the natural gas used.
PLN Indonesia Power has conducted three hydrogen co-firing tests at the Pesanggaran gas-fired power plant (PLTDG), with the blending ratio increasing over time.
The test ratio was 2 per cent in 2022, rising to 7 per cent in 2024 and reaching 23 per cent in 2025.
