PLN Gas Demand Expected to Rise by 4.5% per Year
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) projects that gas requirements for PT PLN (Persero)‘s power plants will continue to rise through 2034. The growth in gas demand is estimated at around 4.5% per year, in line with rising electricity consumption and accelerated electrification across various sectors. PLN EPI President Director Rakhmad Dewanto said electrification in transport, industry, households, and data centres is projected to push the power sector growth to about 4.6%-5.4% per year. ’The power sector is projected to grow the fastest, around 4.6-5.4% per year, driven by electrification in the transport, industrial, residential, and data centre sectors,’ he said, quoted from PLN EPI’s Instagram account, on Friday (22/5/2026). Consequently, amid rising demand, LNG supply is seen as the backbone to maintain the reliability of the national electricity system and support Indonesia’s energy transition. According to PLN EPI briefing materials, electrification’s contribution to Indonesia’s primary energy demand is expected to rise from 28% in 2025 to 38% in 2035. National electricity demand is also forecast to nearly double from 283.7 TWh in 2024 to 581-584 TWh in 2034.
