PLN expands use of EV charging stations for UMM students
State electricity firm PT PLN (Persero) through its East Java Distribution Unit (UID) is expanding the use of a 120 kilowatt (kW) Fast Ultra Charging Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU) for students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).
“The presence of SPKLU on campus not only adds to the electric vehicle charging infrastructure but also serves as a means to broaden the use of clean energy within the community,” said Eric Rossi Priyo Nugroho, General Manager of PLN UID East Java, in a statement in Surabaya on Wednesday.
Eric stated that collaboration with educational institutions is an important part of building the energy ecosystem of the future, as it can serve as a vehicle to expand the use of clean energy among the public. He noted that collaboration with universities holds strategic value because campuses are centres of education and innovation, as well as the birthplace of the generation that will drive future transformation.
“The energy transition is not just about providing infrastructure, but also about building an ecosystem and new habits in using energy that is more efficient and low in emissions,” he said.
Beyond the operation of the SPKLU, PLN also introduced various collaborative opportunities to UMM, including PLN ICON+ which offers Integrated Business Solutions (IBS) such as connectivity services, energy service applications, electricity, gas and water utility management, solar power plants, and electric vehicle support services. PLN also offered the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) as a solution for institutions seeking recognition for using electricity sourced from new and renewable energy plants.
Through this collaboration, PLN UID East Java continues to encourage the involvement of various stakeholders, including educational institutions, businesses, and the public, in accelerating the formation of an electric vehicle ecosystem and the use of green energy in East Java. “PLN will continue to strengthen collaboration and present innovations so that the energy transition provides broader benefits to society while supporting sustainable economic growth,” Eric said.
Ahmad Juanda, Vice Rector II for Personnel, Finance, and General Affairs at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, stressed that UMM is committed to supporting sustainable development not only through the education sector but also by playing a role in strengthening energy resilience. “In addition to carrying out our educational function, we also have a responsibility to maintain food and energy security. Electricity is an alternative energy source that can support decarbonisation, increase energy efficiency, and strengthen national energy resilience,” Ahmad said.
