PLN Expands EV Charging Stations to Accommodate 2026 Eid Exodus and Return Traffic
PT PLN estimates that the number of holidaymakers using electric vehicles during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr exodus and return will reach 23,000 units. This figure represents a significant 60% increase compared to the previous year.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that to anticipate this surge, the company has prepared 4,769 units of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) spread across 3,097 locations throughout Indonesia. The number of these facilities has also increased by around 70% compared to last year.
“We are going all out to ensure all SPKLUs are in ready and optimal condition to serve the growing enthusiasm for electric vehicle holidaymakers,” said Darmawan, quoted from a written statement on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
Darmawan explained that with the wider distribution of SPKLUs, the average distance between charging points is now around 22 kilometres. This is sufficient to ensure that electric vehicle users can undertake long-distance journeys without worrying about running out of power.
He stated that the main focus of providing this infrastructure is on strategic exodus routes, particularly in the Sumatra, Java, and Bali regions. In these three areas, PLN has prepared 1,681 SPKLU units spread across 994 locations.
Of that number, 284 units are located on toll roads, while the rest are spread along non-toll routes that also serve as main travel paths for the public. In addition to fixed infrastructure, PLN has also mobilised 15 mobile SPKLU units placed at several toll exit points. These facilities are prepared as emergency solutions for electric vehicle users needing to recharge during their journeys.
To ensure optimal service, more than 5,000 personnel have been mobilised during the exodus period. “They are tasked with maintaining SPKLU operations as well as providing assistance to electric vehicle users,” said Darmawan.
PLN is also strengthening digital-based services through the PLN Mobile application. Through the Electric Vehicle Digital Services (EVDS) feature, users can plan their journeys more efficiently using the Trip Planner feature to find SPKLU locations along their routes.
Additionally, the AntreEV feature allows users to monitor charging queues in real-time, enabling them to avoid congestion at certain points. “With application support, users can plan their journeys better and more comfortably,” said Darmawan.
Furthermore, this year PLN is introducing the EV-TAP payment system at several SPKLUs in rest areas along the Trans-Java route. This service allows users to make charging transactions using electronic money cards, making the process more convenient.
PLN also provides 24-hour assistance for electric vehicle users via the PLN Mobile application or WhatsApp service to ensure smooth exodus journeys.
