PLN Group also considers hydrogen and ammonia as part of its long-term strategy to support a low-carbon energy system. PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) is building a green hydrogen ecosystem and targeting the low-carbon hydrogen market for the industrial sector, power generation, and sustainable aviation fuel. Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Biomass at PLN EPI, Anita Puspita Sari, stated that the company is developing various renewable energy sources, nuclear power, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), energy storage, and a Green Energy Super Grid. In the initial phase, PLN EPI is targeting industrial sectors with relatively high hydrogen demand, such as the fertiliser and ammonia industry, oil refineries and petrochemicals, the steel and metal industry, and the chemical industry. These sectors are considered to have the potential to become the initial market for green hydrogen development in Indonesia. Beyond meeting industrial needs, PLN EPI also sees significant opportunities in developing electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF). Through this technology, green hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide captured from emissions to produce synthetic crude, which is then processed into low-carbon aviation fuel via a closed carbon loop concept. Anita explained that the demand for e-SAF is projected to continue increasing in line with the development of international regulations that encourage the use of sustainable aviation fuel to reduce emissions in the aviation sector. ‘Indonesia has great potential to become an important player in the green hydrogen industry because it is supported by abundant renewable energy resources. The next challenge is to accelerate ecosystem development, master the technology, and create a market capable of supporting sustainable hydrogen development,’ she said. Through the development of an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem encompassing technology, supply chain, and market aspects, PLN EPI continues to strengthen its primary energy business transformation towards low-carbon energy.
