Energy sector transformation towards cleaner electricity sources requires not only technological change but also adjustment of business strategies in the power generation sector. As part of the national energy transition agenda, companies are beginning to integrate sustainability aspects into various operational activities, including corporate social responsibility programmes.

This approach is being applied by PT PLN Enjiniring, which is reshaping corporate social responsibility (CSR) from mere philanthropic activity into part of business strategy and support for the national energy transition agenda.

PLN Enjiniring Chief Executive Officer Chairani Rachmatullah stated that the company’s CSR policy is now designed in alignment with the direction of business transformation and government energy policy.

According to Chairani, as an engineering company supporting electricity infrastructure projects, PLN Enjiniring must ensure all company strategies are aligned with government policy and the energy transformation direction being pursued by PLN as the parent company.

“Our main mission is to ensure engineering readiness for all electricity infrastructure projects. Therefore, we must align with government policy and energy transformation towards cleaner sources,” she said in a statement received on Saturday (14 March).

To address these challenges, the company has been running a business transformation programme since 2024, designed to last until 2030. This transformation encompasses six strategic pillars known as the 6G Transformation concept: Groom Talent and Culture, Grow Core, Gain New, Guard Value, Go Digital, and Global Partnership.

Through these six pillars, the company implements various programmes to strengthen organisational capacity, develop new and renewable energy (NRE) projects, enhance engineering service quality, strengthen corporate governance, and expand global collaboration.

Chairani considers education a strategic sector for preparing young people to face changes in the energy industry in the future, including developments in new and renewable energy technology.

Beyond strengthening social programmes, PLN Enjiniring is also strengthening sustainability governance through the application of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. The company’s CSR programme refers to seven core subjects of ISO 26000, including organisational governance, human rights, employment practices, environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community engagement and development.

To ensure the implementation of sustainability policy runs effectively, the company has established a Sustainability Committee tasked with overseeing policy, programme implementation, and company sustainability reporting.

Meanwhile, PLN Enjiniring Corporate Secretary Anita Widyiastuti added that the sustainability approach is also integrated with the company’s risk management system. According to her, ESG-related risks have now become part of the company’s risk management framework, so each project and investment also considers social and environmental impacts as well as climate change risks.

This approach also supports the implementation of the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), which targets a significant increase in new and renewable energy capacity over the coming years. Climate risk mitigation is carried out through the development of smart grids, flexible generation, and energy storage technology.

In its implementation, the company has two flagship CSR programmes: Engineer Mengajar and PLNE Pintar. Throughout 2025, this programme has been implemented at four campuses with the participation of approximately 400 students.

For the PLNE Pintar programme during the 2024–2025 period, the company allocated approximately IDR 810 million to run various CSR programmes.

To ensure programme effectiveness, the company also applies a measurement system based on social impact through the Social Return on Investment (SROI) method. Measurement results showed that several programmes delivered significant social benefits, such as educational facility assistance programmes that generated an SROI value of 5.8. This means that every IDR 1 spent by the company generated social benefits of IDR 5.8 for the community.

More broadly, the approach of integrating CSR with business strategy and ESG has also become an increasingly strong trend in the energy sector, particularly within state-owned enterprises. Energy companies no longer view CSR as a standalone social activity but rather as an instrument to strengthen business sustainability, increase social acceptance of energy projects, and support the agenda of transition towards low-carbon energy.

PLN Enjiniring’s commitment to running CSR and sustainability programmes has received recognition through several awards, including TOP CSR Awards 2025 #Star 4, TOP Leader on CSR Commitment 2025, and Best TJSL & CSR Award in Environmental Category. This year, the company is once again a candidate for the TOP CSR Awards 2026.
