PLN Confirms Sumatra Power System Restored After Blackout
PT PLN (Persero) stated that Sumatra’s power system, which experienced a total blackout on Friday, 22 May, has now returned to normal.
“Alhamdulillah, thanks to the relentless efforts of all field personnel and support from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and various regional stakeholders, Sumatra’s power system has now returned to normal,” said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Monday, 25 May 2026.
PLN has completed the restoration of Sumatra’s power system following a widespread disturbance in the interconnection transmission network. By Sunday 06:00 WIB, PLN had normalised 176 affected substations. As part of the restoration process, electricity supply to customers is gradually being restored.
Darmawan stated that the entire restoration process was carried out intensively since the disturbance began on Friday, 22 May.
PLN worked with the government and various local stakeholders to gradually restore the power generation system, transmission network, substations, and electricity distribution to the public.
Darmawan explained that the restoration process prioritised system safety and reliability. After the Sumatra transmission network was successfully reconnected, PLN proceeded with power plant restarts and gradual synchronisation, feeding electricity from generators into the Sumatra transmission system to restore supply incrementally.
Darmawan also expressed gratitude and appreciation to the public for their patience and support during the restoration process.
“We thank the public for their patience and support throughout the restoration process,” Darmawan said.
